- Jean Grey was born the younger daughter of Professor John Grey and his wife,Elaine. She has an older sister, Sara.
- Her childhood, at least early on, was uneventful. Until she was 10, and she witnessed her best friend, Annie Richardson, get hit by a car.
- The shock of the event caused her psychic powers to manifest for the first time, out of control, and she found herself sharing Annie's death. The event traumatized her, leaving her unable to speak or even be social at all.
- Desperate to find help, Professor Grey turned to a fellow academic, Professor Charles Xavier.
- Using his powers of persuasion, he was able to coax Jean out of her trauma, though her powers didn't manifest fully for some time.
- Using Jean as a case study, Professor Xavier then formed a school for Gifted Children, with Jean as one of the first students.
- Jean was kept out of training sessions at first, until her own powers started to manifest in earnest.
- With the Professor's persuasive abilities blossoming into full-blown telepathy, it was soon apparent that Jean's abilities were that and more, as she could also use telekinetic powers.
- Training her and himself both in their abilities, Charles kept Jean back from the other students at first, until she was ready. Then, she was put in with the other students.
- Jean did practice extensively in the use of her powers, though the limit to her field work was just the occasional strange encounter in Salem Center. Even then she was keeping her power use to a minimum, to avoid suspicion being drawn to the school.
- Eventually, she did graduate, and decided to go her own way in the world, just to explore what was out there.
- With her academic credentials, she could have gone anywhere, but in this case, she kept her powers low-key and went to Gotham University, majoring in psychiatry.
- While she has her powers, she's been intentionally keeping a low profile, not wishing to provoke the mysterious Bat-Man that tales speak of… but it isn't in her nature to stay hidden.
