Turn of the Century
It all started with the Chapel of Dresden, really. A group of satanists wanted to breed the ideal high priest and priestess for the being they worshipped. That being called itself 'Satan', of course, that's meaningless. He wouldn't have been the first demon to take that name, nor the last.
Be that as it may, it turns out the Chapel of Dresden had a friend in the Hellstroms. Down through history they were worshippers of the extradimensional entities known as demons. The latest of the family, Victoria, had been sold to the Chapel by her parents as part of their greater plan. She had her womb mystically tattooed to both make her a more suitable mother for hybrid children and to potentially attract 'Satan' to her. It worked.
Victoria may or may not have been aware of her husband's true nature at that point. She later wrote a diary, but that was after she went irretrievably insane. What is known is that she had a son, Daimon, and a daughter three years later, Satana. 'Satan' began teaching both of his children of their heritage. Six months after Satana's birth, a monkey wrench was thrown into the Chapel's plans. They were exterminated by a holy hunter named Stephen Loss. Not one to let a good thing go, 'Satan' kept on with his own plans. Satana was ever the more eager pupil and Daimon grew closer to his mother as a result. When Daimon was nine, his mother walked in on his father and Satana performing a satanic ritual. Tiring of the charade, 'Satan' revealed himself to Victoria who, whether she knew what she was complicit in or not, promptly went totally insane. For the next twelve years, Victoria lived in an asylum.
Daimon and Satana were sent to different orphanages at this point. While there, Daimon met and was befriended by a doctor named Lewis Hefford. Hefford encouraged him to become, of all things, a priest. However, after three years in a monastery, just before being ordained, Daimon inherited the Hellstrom's mansion in Fire Lake, Massachusetts. It was there that he found Victoria's diary and learned her version of things, wherein she attempted to make herself seem the innocent; despite what the truth may have been. More importantly, he learned of his true nature and his father became aware that he knew…
Satan Revealed
Upon Daimon's realization of his true nature, a psychic signal was sent to his father, alerting him to this fact. 'Satan' directed Daimon to the interdimensional portal in the mansion's basement (it's always the basement). Once in his father's Hell-realm (a so-called 'pocket' dimension many powerful demons craft for themselves), 'Satan' made Daimon an offer to serve him in Hell and act as his agent. Being who he was, Daimon refused and was summarily teleported back to the surface. Vowing to fight his father's evil, Daimon then went back down to the portal and confronted his father. For his first time out, he didn't do too badly. This may also be due to the 'Darksoul' his father awakened in him. Armed with this heritage, some innate powers, and his knowledge of religious rites such as exorcism, Daimon managed to hold his own and escape 'Hell' with his father's trident, a demon-drawn chariot, and a more distinct birthmark (Daimon had been born with a birthmark in the shape of a circled, inverted pentagram, after this, there was no mistaking it for what it was).
Daimon then began to develop some real problems. It seems his Darksoul partook greatly of the true nature of a demon, which is corrupt beyond most humans' ability to easily comprehend. Calling himself The Son of Satan and donning a red and golden costume, he would come to fight mystical threats alongside such people as the Invaders. He also met and clashed with his sister, Satana, now an adult, a succubus, and possessed by a powerful entity known as the Basilisk.
Early Career - 1930s
Understanding his true nature and innate abilities, Daimon decided that he should make the best of a bad situation and pursue avenues to which he could not only make a living, but also engage in the purging of demons and unnatural things from the Earth realm. To this end, he began to study the tomes found in his home in Fire Lake as well as begin his college career at the nearby university. He even took it upon himself to seek out the Ancient One offering to become his mystic disciple. The Ancient One however denied Daimon the opportunity as his destiny laid elsewhere. Daimon placed an advertisement in the local papers offering his services as an exorcist. He received his first case and exorcised a woman named Linda Littletress. This success was soon followed by many others and as his career ballooned, so did his studies and knowledge of the mystical worlds. He encountered the Phantom Rider and other early Mystery Men/Women and had many adventures while fighting devils, demons and unclean spirits.
Atlantis, Hyborea and Babylon
In a conflict with the Legion of Nihilists, Daimon realized that there would be another Great Cataclysm. He understood that he must travel back in time to the original Great Cataclysm and stop the chain reaction that would affect his present timeline. He, along with two companions traveled several thousand years into the time of Atlantis. There, he and his companions would spend the next few months tracking and eventually defeating Spyros which unraveled the second Great Cataclysm. This allowed him and his companions to return home.
His life resumed and he continued to fight demons, devils, and unclean spirits while studying all he could find on the subjects at large. Another encounter took him into the Hyborean Age (9,600 BCE) where he would encounter the lines of Conan, Red Sonja, and Ulysses Bloodstone. There, they joined forces to battle evil elements that would unravel time and space alike. He would also spend nearly a year in this time waging war against said evils.
His return home was short lived when he discovered the need to acquire an ancient tome called the Book of Vishanti. Learning that the tome's first appearance was in Babylon some 4000 BCE, Daimon took it upon himself to be the first to acquire such an artifact. However, upon his arrival at that time and after an extensive search, he discovered the book was already claimed by greater mystical force. He challenged that force and was banished back to his own time.
Time of War
Even though he was unable to acquire the tome, Daimon continued his pursuits of all that was unholy within the world.
Toward the end of the 1930s Europe was engulfed in a war as Hitler wished to expand the German empire westward. This would soon draw the attention of Daimon due to the fact that Hitler was interested in acquiring mystical artifacts to strengthen his armies. Daimon knew that no good could come of these acquisitions so he himself ventured into Europe to claim said items prior to, or usurp the objects from Hitler's supernatural SS corps. These adventures would have him encounter the likes of the various Mystery Men of the time including the members of the Justice Society, All-Star Squadron, Invaders, and of course Captain America. He would fight the likes of Baron Von Blood, the Daemonites (exorcising them), the Nazi Cults, and other Axis supernatural foes including Mephisto.
When the Spear of Destiny was utilized to banish all supernaturals and supers from Europe, Daimon found himself in England. There he continued to aid the war effort as much as he could through underworld/supernatural contacts he established during the war.
As the war in Europe came to a close, Daimon found his holdings in the States needed attending, so he returned home. There, he resumed operation as an exorcist and resumed his continued studies into the occult. When the end of the war came and the Spectre did his mojo, Daimon found himself banished to the outer rim of the Hell dimension. He was unable to return back to the Earth dimension.
Hell-Lord
Imprisoned in Hell, Daimon began amassing forces and influence to rise against his father. A hellious civil war would be waged and Daimon would come out the victor. Casting out his father into the demi realms. Claiming the throne, Daimon became a hell-lord and holder of the powers found therein. In this right, he would choose to expand his realm into other so-called Hells and cast out their lords. This imperial expansion would last for decades until he came upon Mephisto's realm and Mephisto himself. This would be the beginning of his undoing. As Satan had made dealings with Mephisto to take back his Hell. In the end, however, Satan spared Daimon's life with the glimmer of hope that Daimon would eventually take a seat next to Satan himself so that they may rule all of the underworlds together. In the mean time, Daimon was banished from the Hell realms back onto the Earth dimension where he discovered that many years had passed and the world greatly changed.
Daimon returned back to his home in Fire Lake and found cultists had taken up residence. In his anger, he killed them all for their infraction and cast their souls to his father's realm. After cleansing his home, Daimon chose to remain within and lay low for a while to observe the new world he lived within. He eventually decided that he should re-enter the world and continue on as he had done in the past; as the world's foremost excorist and supernatural investigator. In this, he returned to New York and staked his claim to the position of Black King of the club's inner circle and he reopened his supernatural investigations business by posting an ad in the Daily Bugle, Gotham Gazette, and Daily Planet among other notable newspapers.
Overview
Daimon Hellstrom is, first and foremost, a creature of dichotomy. Man of God, Son of Satan, Protector of Earth, Lord of Hell - Daimon's life and nature have been shaped by inner conflicts since before his birth. Daimon struggles with his inner nature as a basically good man versus his demonic heritage, which is horrifically corrupt, vile, sadistic, selfish, hedonistic, and flat out -evil-. He has actually managed to reach something of an accord between the two sides by surrendering to his darker urges more often than a so-called 'good' man normally would. Indeed, Daimon seems to wallow in darkness, to do otherwise would be to invite disaster.
Daimon is, despite his outward disdain for almost everyone and everything, very much a humanist. He believes that humans have the inherent ability and right to choose their own fate and actions and, by extension, to guide their own destiny. He has developed a great loathing for otherdimensional "meddling" in human affairs, regardless of the stated or perceived motive. Despite this, his moral standards are not exactly what one might call uplifting.
Basically, Daimon believes that everyone should be able to do whatever they want whenever they want so long as they don't directly hurt anyone else. Drug use, all manner of perversion, the most outright forms of self-expression, he sees no problems with any of it. To him, "moral decay" is a meaningless term. If you want to live your life in pious devotion to your deity, feel free. If your idea of a good time involves whips, chains, and motor oil, so long as everyone's willing, that's also fine. Daimon is not shy about expressing these views at all, to anyone. He has little respect for authority he does not perceive as earned.
Finally, Daimon is both highly charismatic and extremely confrontational. In short, he is a jerk, but a jerk that many people cannot help but be attracted to on several levels.
Confrontational
Due to his nature and upbringing, Daimon is not someone who likes to back down from anything. He is confrontational to the point of belligerence, especially when he is being questioned by people he doesn't like. This is not to say that he won't listen to reason, but you'd better convince him first.
Temper
Daimon has a temper. A bad temper. A -really- bad temper. Daimon has the kind of temper that has led to him killing an entire roomful of cultists who severally annoyed him and often leads him to slap people standing next to him when he's frustrated. This is a natural personality trait that is highly augmented by his hybrid nature. Demons are highly aggressive creatures and, as such, are very prone to displays of anger. Additionally, Daimon's personal philosophy tends to allow for free expression of emotion, positive and negative. The fact that he a powerful entity doesn't help matters any. His temper is not uncontrollable, but when roused, his ire is terrible.
Charismatic
Despite his nastier traits, Daimon is a highly charismatic individual. This is not just the sort of charisma that attracts potential lovers to him (although he has that in spades), but this is the charisma of a natural leader, a king, a Lord of Hell. Daimon enjoys an almost cult status among those who follow his particular branch of occult studies. He can ask favors, get information, and is generally known and admired. On top of this, Daimon's charisma applies to many so-called 'normal' people as well. People in general seem to be drawn to him unless something in their nature is antithetical to him. For instance, one of his friends is an ordained priest who is fully aware of his nature, yet continues their association. He has attracted friends and followers from every imaginable walk of life over the years, and is respected even among some in the 'superhero' community.
Open Minded
Despite his highly opinionated nature, Daimon is also remarkably tolerant of any sort of life a person chooses to lead so long as they don't step on others' lives. He does not care about sexuality, lifestyle, means of self-expression, race, creed, color, genetic state, political affiliation, et cetera, so long as you keep it to yourself. This isn't to say he cares if you talk about it, but the moment your means of expression. There is a great deal of leeway where this is concerned. While he may disdain the average priest, and indeed may openly mock them, he isn't likely to attack someone just for being a priest. If said priest were hunting down a werewolf for killing some innocent parishioners, there's still no problem. If said priest were hunting down a werewolf purely for -being- a werewolf, then we have a problem.
Humanist
It may seem odd, coming from the future ruler of an extradimensional Hell-realm, but Daimon is a very strong believer in humanity's ability and intrinsic right to either elevate or damn itself without outside interference. He believes that the seeds of great good and abyssal evil lie in every human soul and that the expression of such is a very personal thing. This isn't to say he's going to stand idly by while an occult murderer kills people trying to bring a demon to Earth, but if you're going to be a jerk and ruin your own life, he won't stop you or even care. However, if you want to devote your life to helping homeless kittens, the same thing applies.
Honorable
This isn't quite the typical definition of the word. Daimon will lie, cheat, steal, and kill when he believes it to be necessary, but due to his nature and inherent (twisted) morality, he will honor an agreement freely entered into to its bitter end. If he tells you something, you may or may not choose to believe him, but if he strikes a deal with you, he -will- uphold his end so long as you do the same. Cheat him and all bets are off. This means that he can be trusted, especially if his own interests coincide with yours. However, there must be an actual stated bargain of some sort for him to behave in this totally honorable fashion.
Motivation
Daimon is /motivated/ by many things. One would be to defeat his father (Satan) and take Hell for himself. Another would be to rid the world of infernal abominations through exorcism and other means of purging. Daimon is also interested in this new age of reason and technology. He's curious to see just how things have changed and how he can take advantage of those changes.
Goals
As noted in Motivation's last section, Daimon is interested in discovering the world for what it is and what it is worth. Other IC goals include setting up an establishment to work paranormal investigations. Promote paranormal roleplay. Seduce as many beautiful women as he can. Adventure in exotic locations such as Gotham where villainy is as close to paranormal as normal can get.
Arrogant
He is the son of a major demon. He is lord of his own pocket dimension. He has faced down demons and angels alike. He is one of the more powerful sorcerers on Earth. This does tend to go to your head. Well, it does if you're Daimon Hellstrom. Daimon usually believes that there are few challenges he cannot handle, few foes he cannot defeat by one means or another, and few obstacles he cannot overcome. He is often correct in this reasoning, but not always. Daimon also does not like to be talked down to by anyone, ever. He can also be somewhat stubborn where order-taking is concerned. Indeed, it takes at least a minimal effort to get Daimon to listen to almost anyone's ideas unless they are on familiar terms with him or speaking on a subject wholly outside his experience. He is resistant to taking orders or directions unless he personally deems it a good idea. Coupled with his dislike of authority figures, this means he is not an easy person to include in a team unless there is some sort of bond there already or he accepts the command structure as a good idea.
Ambient Power
Daimon has a great ability to manipulate the ambient mystical energy of this universe and others. He taps this power, channels it through himself, shaping it as it goes, then releases it. This can be either a 'quick and dirty' usage, such as the generic blast of 'eldritch energy' or causing a nearby TV to explode, or a more subtle weaving of this power, crafting a 'spell'. Daimon has a great affinity for destructive mystical energies (his output is staggering) as well as, ironically, protective. He also has the ability to sense and discern the nature of a magical being, artifact, or effect. This also gives him the ability to discern enchantments and supernatural effects.
EXAMPLES
WARDS: Daimon can create semipermanent patterns of mystical force commonly called 'wards'. Basically, wards are like membranes, they keep certain things out (or in), depending upon their creation. Daimon can create permanent or temporary wards against extradimensional entities (such as demons -or- angels), and has even trapped a single human being within a house for a day. He has even crafted wards that can 'filter' some things out while letting others through (On one occasion such a ward filtered an angelic byproduct from a human's body without directly harming him). And he can create shields against purely physical forces, although this is not his forte' by any means.
GATES: Daimon has a great facility for interdimensional travel, much like Thor, save he needs no tools. He can channel power to tear open 'gates' in space and effectively teleport. This ability is not reflexive, takes a few moments, and he must traverse to his own Hell. He must craft the gate in a static location, usually about himself. When he creates a gate, Hellfire leaks out about the edges of the tear, but usually causes no damage to the surroundings save minor scorching. He has been shown to travel from New York to San Francisco using a single gate.
SPELLCRAFT: Daimon can also channel power into other spells, weakening or augmenting them, depending on the circumstances. The type of interference he can create in 'white magical' effects can be catastrophic due to his infernal nature.
HEALING: Ironically, Daimon is a fair hand at healing magics. While his ability falls far short of Topaz, he can mystically speed healing from common wounds, mend bones, extract bullets, and help 'cleanse' mystical wounds (which heal notoriously badly). He cannot raise the dead per se, but if someone's soul were held in another dimension or a 'hell', he could potentially go get it. (This is strictly TP fodder and is notoriously difficult).
CONTRACTS: Where Hellstrom excels in magic is in the bindings of contracts. Hellstrom can essentially grant /wishes/ based on an exchange for a being's soul. Using a portion of the soul energy, Hellstrom powers the event and can literally reshape personal reality to reflect the individual's wish.
Invocation
Daimon's biggest area of magical 'weakness' is his lack of practice with the summoning and invocation of extradimensional entities' power. He is -quite- adept at summoning such entities as can be called, but for those who grant power to others, Daimon just doesn't have the precise kind of relationship they usually look for. It would be like Mephisto utilizing the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. If a demon-lord calls upon someone for power, the terms are usually a lot more specific than "Spread my fame." and the power granted is usually far greater in magnitude. For Daimon to call upon a powerful, extradimensional entity for all but the most basic of powers, he would likely have to make a formalized pact or bargain. Of course, unlike most human sorcerers, he is actually in a position to do so.
EXAMPLES:
SUMMONING: Daimon has extensive knowledge and experience in the summoning, binding, and controlling of extradimensional entities. He can call demons, imprison angels, erect barriers such as those that held the Mindless Ones, and numerous other feats involving the manipulation of dimensional barriers.
EXORCISM: Daimon is one of the greatest exorcists on Earth, and several other worlds. He can purge demons who have possessed others and has even casually cast a god from within a human host (Khonshu from the Moon Knight). He can tear open gates to other dimensions and cast lesser entities out and giving him knowledge of a demon's true name is a good way to make sure it will never bother you again. He apparently slew his own father (a demon of Mephisto-like power) using that method.
Hellfire and Soulfire
Daimon has access to a power source most human sorcerers can tap only through another entity, the power that churns and surges through those bleak, extradimensional realms known as 'hells'. Daimon is not only heir to such power by his birth, but he is ruler of his own pocket dimension as well. As such, he can channel and indeed, seems to internally produce this power. The two most common manifestations of this power are termed 'Hellfire' and 'Soulfire'.
HELLFIRE: Hellfire is like flame, but has an almost fluid consistency to it as well as some unusual combustion properties. For one, hellfire is almost impossible to extinguish. It can create and spread normal fires which can be dealt with normally, but hellfire itself is not subject to water, a fire extinguisher, and can often not even be smothered. Fortunately, it tends to burn itself out rather quickly. Occasionally, hellfire can be created, 'just for show', as with the Ghost Rider's body-sheathing flame. It does not physically burn, but looks quite impressive. The intensity and duration of a hellfire manifestation can often be determined by a skilled wielder. Daimon has created bursts large enough to fill caverns and kill dozens of people at once while shielding specific individuals behind himself.
SOULFIRE: Soulfire is a manifestation of a different nature. It can be drawn from the creator's soul or even from others, willing donors or victims. Soulfire seems to be mystically corrosive, after a fashion. It can literally damage the living essence, or 'soul' of a being it is directed against, causing a sensation of either searing heat or cold accompanied by a deep sense of violation without any corresponding physical damage.
Both hellfire and soulfire can be directed at mystical phenomena with varying effects. They may consume mystical bonds, harm mystical beings, or eat away at protective spells and can even be used to 'defile' an area, blight crops, et cetera. Both also help enhance various mystical (usually infernal) rituals when used to perform feats such as scribing circles, pentagrams, or to consume sacrifices. Both can also be used in many of the same ways ambient mystical energy can. (The precise effects of hellfire or soulfire on any particular mystical effect should be agreed upon during RP as, like all magic, it can vary).
Resistances
Due to his nature and station, Daimon has certain immunities and resistances.
HEAT-RESISTANCE: One of the most notable is his near-total resistance to heat and flame. Daimon could shrug off a blast from the Human Torch or walk through a burning building with no ill effect. This ability usually extends to his clothing and any items carried with him. Indeed, with a minor mystical effort, he can protect other people from this as well, as when he shielded a cultist from a hellfire blast powerful enough to kill several dozen people. Although he has a hardy constitution, he has not demonstrated any especial resistance to cold, nor does he display undue vulnerability to it.
HEALTH: Daimon also does not demonstrate several of the normal human functions he used to. He no longer seems to require air or food, although some sleep is necessary for his psychological well being (such as it is), he demonstrates a reduced need for this as well, his innate stubborness doesn't help, either. Although he does drink and appears to become inebriated, it is unclear if he must actively allow this to occur.
It is known that normal terrestrial illnesses cannot effect him. He cannot get cancer from smoking, for instance. Engineered diseases have much the same problem. He also has a great resistance to mystical illnesses as well.
Immortality
Daimon's resistance to physical injury and death is somewhat unusual. While he -can- be injured by most means a normal human can be, he is extraordinarily difficult to slay by conventional means. Most demon lords are nearly impossible to permanently kill, especially outside their realms. It is almost a certainty that Daimon, having ascended (descended?) to that station now shares this ability. He will not age unless he wishes, he cannot die unless slain. This does not confer any especial resistance to physical damage not directly attributed to a mystical power. He can feel a punch from a normal human being and it will cause him pain. He can be shot, stabbed, or run over, and he will bleed, break bones, et cetera, but the odds of a conventional attack actually -killing- him are somewhat remote.
Daimon heals at a slightly higher rate than a normal human does, naturally, but this is nowhere near swift enough to be considered regeneration. It is akin to the ability Spider-Man has to heal from such things, perhaps even a bit slower. He can be healed by magic or by going 'home' and drawing on the power there to overcome conventional injury, but mystical injuries take much longer. Indeed, Daimon was laid up for what seems to have been several weeks after having a hole blown through his leg by one of the Breathing Guns. Other demon lords (such as Zahgurim) have been torn to pieces on Earth, but this does not seem to kill them, only banish them to their nether-realms until they can recover.
Darksoul
When he wishes (and occasionally when deeply enraged) Daimon can access, or perhaps allow to come forth, a physical form slightly more demonic and less human than what he normally presents to the world. While this is mostly cosmetic, it is rather dramatic. Daimon's sister shares this exact ability, as most human/demon hybrids seem to. Daimon has expressed 'levels' of this as well. Most commonly, he has manifested deep bronzed, slightly dry-seeming skin, glowing eyes, fangs, small claws for fingernails, pointed ears, and a demonic cast to his features. However, he has, on rare occasion, taken on a form reminiscent of a traditional devil with wings, furred legs, odd feet, and bony blades on his elbows. Additionally, his strength seems to increase slightly, but this could simply be a side-effect of unbridled aggression, as Daimon has borderline superhuman strength to begin with.
The most common use for the first level manifestation of this ability is to increase the efficiency of certain dark magics by dropping any pretense of humanity and allowing his infernal power free reign, as it were. Of note is the fact that these manifestations are so overtly demonic that it is difficult for a normal human to take them for anything else. But he has been mistaken for a mutant at least once.
Finally, Daimon has received a 'gift' from his father. It is called the Darksoul. His soul actually has two components, human, and demonic. Removal of his Darksoul nearly killed him in three months time. Indeed, his current Darksoul isn't the one he started out with (long story). It is not quite an entity on its own but coils and whispers deep in the recesses of his psyche and tempts him. He can allow it out but the situation is very similar to the Phoenix Force's hosts, just nastier. The Darksoul, when freed, fills him, granting him awesome mystical and physical might. He once slaughtered an entire host of demons by himself, but the price is high. Every time he lets it loose is becomes that much harder to rein it in the next time. It is something done only in the most dire of dire situations. (Basically, TP only, this is a BIG deal).
Demonic Mind
Daimon's mind is difficult to read or psionically attack for several different reasons. His priestly training prepared him for real exorcisms, meaning that he was made aware of the signs of another presence attacking one's mind. His strength of will is extraordinary, as befits a powerful sorcerer. Many mages also utilize their astral disciplines to help fend off purely mental assaults by meeting them directly. Finally, what really makes things difficult is his nature…
Daimon was born half-demon and is the current ruler of his own hell-realm. His very nature is spiritually corrupt and anyone contacting anything but the very surface of his mind will, unless prepared, be confronted by a mind suited to ruling hell. This can be very traumatic for the interloper, with effects ranging from mild shock to convulsions, depending on the intruder's skill and familiarity with this sort of thing. Dr. Strange, though he may find it distasteful, would likely suffer no ill effects. Someone like Psylocke would not likely experience the worst result, but would feel grossly 'unclean' and may be shaky afterwards.
It is nearly impossible to seize control of Daimon's will without extremely powerful magics or great cosmic power. This is due to the fact that his spiritual nature is corrupt and very powerful. Nothing so petty as mesmerism can change a demon's behavior, after all. Indeed, he is comparable to other hell-lords such as Mephisto in this regard. However, Daimon is vulnerable to purely -psychological- manipulation, provided someone can manage it. If he makes a wrong decision or is tricked, he has only himself to blame.
Finally, Daimon's powers are such that they cannot really be properly stolen by your average mutant 'power thief'. In this respect, he is comparable to the Juggernaut, with a direct conduit to hell. Anyone attempting to absorb his powers through a 'natural' ability will experience results ranging from outright failure to uncontrolled power effects, to a total submergence of their will to Daimon's. (In RP terms, results may vary, but it won't be what the power thief expected). Daimon is subject to having his power tapped or drained away through sorcerous means, although his potential is vast.
Soul Skimming
Daimon has a rather unusual ability to perceive broad patterns in the psychic makeup of those he encounters. Basically, he can tell what sort of soul you have. He cannot read thoughts but can, in a general sense, tell if you are a 'good person' or a 'bad person' and all the subtle shadings in between. Wolverine, for instance, has a very dark and tainted soul, but struggles mightily to be good, while Dr. Doom is noble, yet ruthless and The Red Skull is a remorseless monster. This is the sort of information he has access to. This can prove -very- useful when interacting with others.
Occult Items
Daimon has an extensive occult library as well as access to certain supernatural artifacts. His library is probably one of the most complete collections of real, working demonology and exorcism in the world as well as having a great deal of supplementary information on magical spells, rituals, and supernatural entities.
Daimon also has a hodgepodge collection of items he has come into possession of over the years such as his netheranium trident, which is an item capable of projecting hellfire and exorcising demons, spirits, and gods. Netheranium is a psychically and magically active extradimensional element. He has access to his chariot, which is drawn by three demons. He has also found several items from a foe of his named Stephen Loss, notably a page from an arcane text with sufficient power, in the hands of an amateur, to kill several priests and summon a specific demon. Loss also had an occult book apparently covered with the skin of "the first man" as well as several magical weapons such as knives that hunt by taste and a mystical saw able to carve through most forms of matter. Daimon killed Loss while in Loss's home, it is likely Daimon has either destroyed or taken these items. Of note is the fact that Daimon has a tendency to destroy items he has confronted unless they are somewhat unusual or pose little threat to him (for example, he destroyed a set of mystical armor that was almost entirely magic-proof because one of the components used to be a friend of his).
One of the nastier artifacts Daimon has access to (primarily held by sir Octavious Netch) is one of the two Breathing Guns. These were made for Al Capone in the 1920s. These powerful artifacts are capable of slaying demons and injuring supernatural beings of great power (one put a hole right through Daimon's leg). They hiss when danger or occult forces are present and their bullets are apparently intelligent, tracking their prey to some extent. Daimon is reluctant to use the one he has access to and the second gun's location is currently unknown.
Basically, much like Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, Daimon's home contains numerous lesser mystical and demonic artifacts. (Basically, Daimon could potentially have almost anything in there, RP and TPs can determine exactly what he may have at any given time).
Money
Money. Daimon's got it. While hardly a jet-setting playboy, Daimon started out with a trust set up by the Chapel of Dresden to make sure their future high priest wouldn't have to worry about strictly material needs. Daimon has augmented this with funds gained from his lecture tours, book sales, and consultant work. A little shrewd investing here and there and Daimon currently has few financial worries.
Mansion
The Hellstroms have owned a mansion at Fire Lake, Massachusetts for hundreds of years. It is currently Daimon's 'home' on Earth. There is a portal to his realm in the basement and he keeps a sizable occult library there. He inherited it from his mother and owns several acres of the surrounding wilderness as well. It is well-appointed and kept fully stocked with all the basic needs and then some. He has a private movie theatre, several guest rooms, and facilities for occult research as well as all the normal modern amenities. Needless to say, the mansion is -heavily- warded and protected magically. In fact, no 'angelic' or 'demonic' being or artifact can enter unless Daimon purposefully allows it in (he and his are, of course, immune to this restriction). His wards are about as powerful as those around Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, not easily broken. The 'proximity' of an actual hell-realm means his wards are even harder to tear down or break through, shored up as they are by its proximity. The mansion is currently the headquarters of Anton Devine's Church of Lucifer, an occult group in line with Daimon's own philosophies. While amateurs in the mystic arts at best, they can provide information and medical attention to even unusual beings.
Hell
It's pretty basic, really. Daimon Hellstrom is the potential ruler and son of the absolute ruler of a pocket dimension of the sort commonly ruled by Type II demons and known as 'hells'. Hells are usually inhabited by lesser extradimensional parasitic entities and the astral sheathes of human beings who are now deceased. Or, if you want to put it another way, demons and human souls. Much like other mystics did, Daimon holds sway over his father's hell and all its inhabitants. He makes the rules, he gives the orders, he calls the shots. He can summon demons from his hell for aid or specific tasks, he can travel there and bring other beings with him. He can even remove select souls from his realm and try to guide them elsewhere (such as to a 'heaven'), but he cannot restore the dead to life with such ease. He can also control the terrain and 'climate' of his realm by an act of will. Indeed, in many ways, Daimon defines what 'reality' is in his domain. There are limits, of course. He cannot simply render a visitor instantly dead, but he -can- make the place rather nasty, with geysers of fire, acid lakes, et cetera.
Basically, within this realm, Daimon is more powerful than he is on Earth, as is any hell-lord, but his half-human nature helps offset this somewhat. So he has demons, he has human souls, and he has an entire pocket dimension to travel to and call his own. Not a bad deal, if you can live with it.
Demonspawn
Daimon Hellstrom is known among certain segments of the supernatural community, both on Earth and elsewhere. His situation in this regard is much like that of other mystics that rule sub dimensions. He can use this position to influence and intimidate others but it also means he can gain enemies based purely on that fact as well. Either way, certain beings will know of him even if he is as yet unaware of them.
Contacts
During the 20's, 30's, and 40's, Hellstorm acquired many acquaintances. Most of which are long dead. However, those that are still alive, he can call upon for a favor - or enter debt. In addition to this, he trades in souls and favors. He's very good at striking deals with friends, enemies and especially strangers. He has also made a reputation for himself in the mystic community (albeit outdated), he can make contact with any one of them and hope for the best. In addition to his general contacts, Hellstorm is also a member of the Hellfire Club and holds the position of Black Bishop in the Inner Circle.
Persuasion
Daimon is a bargain-maker by nature and was taught conflict-resolution by the church. He can actually be diplomatic when it's necessary, but he is not the best at getting people to calm down. His usual tactic is to try intimidating people into being reasonable. Despite his methods, he can actually craft agreements between parties that are equitable, but he's hardly a great diplomat.
Research
Daimon was trained to perform research by the Catholic church. That organization has a venerable history of its members being able to locate almost any information given enough time. Daimon has continued to update his library and ability to seek any sort of information in text form, online, or through contacts. There is very little Daimon cannot find out, even certain secret or "lost" information may be his to find.
Resistance
Daimon is pretty good at dealing with deprivation and harsh conditions. He endured such for some time while coming to grips with his Darksoul and after the death of Hellcat. Daimon has gone nonstop for a few days when pursuing a foe, neglecting basic needs such as food and sleep. It may very well now be the case that, since his assuming rulership of his father's realm, his need for such has been reduced, but it was not the case before and he still did it.
Daimon's tolerance for pain is simply remarkable. He can endure searing agony and still act in a basically coherent fashion. He has weathered assaults and injuries that would put most people out of a fight and has still managed to keep going. On one occasion he had a hole blown clear through his leg with a weapon designed to kill demons and still managed to drag his shooter some distance afterwards.
Dodge
Sometimes the best tactic in a fight is not to be there. This is especially true when your foe may be hurling blasts of energy designed to damage your soul directly. Daimon isn't the most nimble thing in the world, but he knows enough to get out of the way when he sees something nasty coming. However, nonmystical attacks coming at bullet-like speeds are a bit difficult for him to focus on unless he has a blanket sort of protection active.
Chariot Driving
Daimon has picked up the unusual skill of charioteering. He is adept enough to drive a flying chariot pulled by demonic steeds and fight at the same time. His balance and coordination are superb in this respect. Ordinary draft animals are actually that much easier to control than what he's used to so he can drive standard chariots, wagons, carriages, and so on with great ability.
Tracking
Daimon is good at following people and…other things. He knows the sorts of traces people leave as they move through cities, how to find their usual hangouts, and so on. He is also a fair hand at wilderness tracking, but he's no expert. He could probably follow a convict fleeing from jail through the woods, but an experience outdoorsman like Logan would soon leave him in the dust.
Riding
Daimon, in addition to charioteering, also knows how to ride various…beasts. Considering the majority of his experience involves demonic creatures, natural animals are actually easier for him to handle. He has a good feel for his mount's movements and mood and can perform other, fairly complex actions while riding, such as fighting or spellcasting.
Sleight of Hand
It's just a little thing he picked up. He's no Randi or Copperfield, but he's pretty good at palming small items and simple coin and card tricks. It's an amusing way to play with people without actually spending any real, mystical effort. He is a talented amateur at best.
Arcane Lore
Daimon Hellstrom is one of the more knowledgeable people on Earth (or off it) in regards to the world of mystical beings, powers, artifacts, and locations. He is intimately familiar with all things infernal and angelic and has kept up on the local competition, so to speak. He is adept enough to recognize totally new mystical phenomena and figure out ways to deal with them. He knows the ways of ghosts, spirits, elementals, gods, and most anything else strange and mystical. He has an extensive library, good connections, and an excellent memory for such things. He ranks right up there with the big guns in terms of what he knows or can find out and what he can't personally find out, he can ask his colleagues.
Criminology
From his time as a paranormal/supernatural detective, Daimon gained an understanding of criminal patterns and modes of behavior. From his role as a lord of hell, Daimon has learned a lot more about the ways of sin. Combined, Daimon has quite a good chance of playing detective given a crime scene to look at, some maps, and any evidence present. He is particularly good at occult-related crime as well as determining whether crimes were committed by someone with real power or someone trying to make you think they have it. He can track a serial killer's movements and determine a likely next victim, he can make a good guess as to a thief's likely next target if he has that person's criminal history, and he can get a good idea of where the local evil cult might try to get that virgin for their sacrifice. He can also apply this skill to more mundane sorts of crime, but rarely does.
Medicine
Daimon's knowledge of medicine is limited to immediate first aid. In point of fact, the majority of this knowledge he picked up "super-heroing" and also from the counterculture aficionados he currently spends time with. Thus, he knows how to deal with shock, certain forms of trauma, drug overdoses, exhaustion, dehydration, overheating, as well as basic aid for bleeding and broken bones.
Scholar-Religion
Daimon studied to be a priest and, since then, has crossed paths with beings representing numerous religious pantheons as well as representatives of numerous faiths. Daimon knows basic details about most of the world's religions, big and small, as well as numerous details of their forms of worship, holidays, and rituals.
Search
Daimon is pretty good at finding hidden items. He has an eye for where people (and other things) would hide something if they needed to. He's a bit better at doing this in buildings than outdoors, however, as most of his experience in this area has been urban. But he has surprised people by deducing where objects have been hidden in the past.
Streetwise
Daimon knows how to deal with low-lives, dealers, pimps, gang members, and all manner of unsavory person. Considering the realm he rules, it would be surprising if he -didn't-. Even on Earth, he often spends time in the company of folks 'regular people' would not approve of. He's not quite to the point of identifying every tag in the city, but he knows what to say and how to handle himself.
Surveillance
Daimon knows how to keep an eye on someone by both conventional and mystical means. He is not familiar enough with modern technology to plant wiretaps or bugs, however he may be able to find people who -can- do something more complex for him. he is, however, not a bad hand at keeping visual tabs on someone and learning their habits. He can augment this greatly by mystically scrying upon someone.
Survival
Daimon knows a little bit about surviving outdoors, away from civilization. He's not an Eagle Scout, but he could hunt foe himself and others and find shelter if need be. In fact, this ability also functions in other dimensions. Daimon could likely keep people alive in an extradimensional environment (like a hell) so long as conditions weren't totally inimical to them and food wasn't a problem.
Bluff
He isn't known as Hellstorm, Prince of Lies for nothing. Daimon is supremely capable at the art of the bluff. He can lie with an utterly straight face and make you believe it. He has even successfully lied to and bluffed demons on occasion. He has an excellent poker face and can mislead someone conversationally with a high degree of skill.
Charm
There's just something about him. It's the sort of thing your mother warns you about but you end up wanting anyway. He has it. Daimon is one charming scoundrel. Despite the fact that his behavior can range from arrogant to outright barbaric there's some quality to him that keeps attracting people (especially women) to him. This isn't to say it works on -everyone-, but he has the kind of animal magnetism and highly dominant personality that appeals to many women (against their better judgment). He can use this to get the usual things, but also to wheedle information and gather followers.
Command
Daimon is excellent at getting people to do what he says. If he wanted, he could gather a cult in a relatively short time. He gives orders to demons. You might go so far as to say Daimon was born to rule (in a sense, he was). He is the sort of person who gives orders that others find themselves moving to obey. Oddly enough, those who know him very well and personally are actually less likely to be susceptible to this.
Interrogation
Give this one a little thought. Daimon is half-demon and rules a hell-realm. He is very intimidating and can 'skim' the contents of your soul. He is quite capable of getting information out of almost anyone but the most recalcitrant subject. He has even managed to trick enemies into ranting about their plans and support during battle. Depending on the subject he is willing to use any means necessary to gain information…-any- means.
Willpower
Daimon's will is like molten iron in regards to mental intrusion and possession. Indeed, it may very well be as nigh-impossible to possess him as it is for any hell lord. Daiests as a 'feeling' unless he is actively seeking such things.
Scholar-Demonology
Daimon Hellstrom is one of the foremost, if not the foremost demonologists on the planet, and possibly off it. His intense study of the habits, nature, and habitats of demons have only increased after he became the lord of his own hell-realm and more akin to a demon himself. Daimon is familiar with the names, MOs, realms, past plans, known enemies and agents, and basic facts about major and minor demons from numerous dimensions. His knowledge is not limited to the Type II demons he is related to, but also extends to the Elder Gods, Type III extradimensional horrors, degenerated deities, and other entities that inhabit the dark corners of the multiverse. Daimon has personally met many of these entities, has spied on others, received reports on still others, and read up on as many as possible. Daimon is likely to recognize a particular demon's symbol, method of operating, choice of victims, likely promises made, standard bargains, and numerous other details. If it's infernal, Daimon likely has at least some knowledge of it.
Knowhow-Lecturing
Daimon is an exceptionally adept and engaging public speaker and lecturer. Despite the topics he tends to cover he manages to captivate audiences with his viewpoints, research, wit, and informed opinions. He's had a good run through numerous universities and private clubs and still occasionally gets contacted to be a guest speaker at all sorts of functions.
Knowhow-Writing
Daimon is a pretty good writer and has actually had some guides on occultism and demonology published. His audience is somewhat limited, but his research is impeccable, his interviews compelling, and his writing style very easy to follow by the amateur without talking down to a reader and still satisfying a scholarly audience. Daimon still receives some royalties from book sales and does sign the occasional copy, if he's in the mood.
Scholar-Academia
Daimon has done some time in the halls of academia outside the seminary. He has been a guest lecturer and speaker at a fair number of universities throughout the world. He has given a bit of study to the way such institutions work, since he has submitted academic papers to them as well. He knows the basics of types of tenure, submission guidelines, and he's quite adept at the political maneuvering that goes on inside the ivory towers.
Brawling
Daimon Hellstrom has not had extensive, formalized training in hand to hand combat. What he -has- had is a fairly large number of extremely vicious entities from several dimensions try to kill him in horrific ways. While not quite as proficient as he is with melee weapons, Daimon is an exceedingly savage and brutal fighter, as befits his nature. While capable of doing fairly well in a fight normally, Daimon can also enhance his physical might to some extent by allowing his demonic nature to 'show through' a bit more. When that happens, he tends to fight even nastier and more brutally. Basically, Daimon has the mystical equivalent of 'street fighting' experience. He fights to win and to keep it short.
Psychology
Daimon has a great insight into the workings of the human mind. This comes initially from his training to be a priest, since counseling is part of a priest's duties. However, as Daimon began to understand more and more what it is to be a demon, from time spent in his father's realm, he also began to gain a deeper insight into human souls and desires. Daimon is very good at 'reading' people and understanding what tends to motivate them and just how far they may or may not go. This is supported by a nebulous, possible supernatural ability of his, but stands on its own as well.
Intimidation
Daimon Hellstrom has seen it from the best. He faced down 'Satan' and didn't blink. He learned it from the best. He is the ruler of a hell full of demons and a powerful sorcerer in his own right. He is one scary guy and when he wants to, he can demonstrate to other people just how scary that is. Daimon is an absolute expert when it comes to intimidating people or other entities. This is, however, something he has to consciously do. His natural demeanor is not quite so imposing.
Scholar-Exorcism
Daimon Hellstrom is one of the foremost experts in the history, process, ramifications, uses, and rituals of exorcism, the expulsion of invading spirits. From his priestly training, to his adventuring career, to his rulership of a hell-realm, Daimon has gathered facts and techniques on the process. He is adept enough to expel gods from mortal vessels (as he did with Khonshu and the Moon Knight) and has even seen one known case of angelic possession. There are few things that Daimon does not know about this discipline of faith and sorcery.
Languages
Daimon has picked up several languages over the course of his various careers. From the priesthood, he learned Latin, from his sorcerous researches, he picked up several ancient tongues no longer spoken, such as old Atlantean, Lemurian, and some languages used by wizards in the Hypoborean era. Finally, he also knows a bit of Italian, German, and Spanish, mostly from the modern crowd he runs with.
Melee Combat
Daimon is proficient in the use of several melee weapons. While he can swing an axe or sword he is more skilled with knives, daggers, and other 'ritual' weaponry. Just because they are often used for rituals doesn't mean they aren't dangerous, as demon-worshippers seem to have a predilection for large, ornate, nasty knives. But where Daimon really shines is in his use of polearms, particularly tridents. For a long time, his netheranium trident was a focus for his power as well as a physical weapon capable of harming supernatural beings. Daimon became adept in its use in both a full-length and a shorter form. He is still most comfortable with a trident, but can also use other polearms with nearly the same aptitude, especially ones with a point or cutting weapon at one end. Daimon is good enough with this sort of weapon to use it effectively while steering a chariot. He can also effectively fight multiple opponents with somewhat greater than human strength in this fashion. He's no Elektra, but he is definitely dangerous.
Mystical Combat
Daimon Hellstrom is an expert in battling the supernatural, from demons to sorcerers to vampires to angels, he's seen (and fought) it all. He is a crafty foe in combat, able to disguise his true power levels before unleashing truly awesome mystical assaults. He is also able to quickly switch tactics from arcane energy to a spiritual attack and back again. Daimon has held his own against major demons and gods in battle and could likely give the sorceror supreme a good run for his money in that regard.
Birthmark
Daimon has an unusual 'birthmark' stretching across and down most of his upper chest. it looks like an inverted, circled pentagram, a standard symbol of demon-worshippers for some time now. It can be passed off as scarification, an exquisitely clean job of it, but it is very recognizable to those who've seen Daimon bare-chested (and that's a -lot- of people). It also marks him at the very least as someone with a body-mod kick at worst a full blown demon worshipper and cultist.
Extradimensional
While a very powerful sorcerer, Daimon has one particular area of inexperience. Due to his nature and sorcerous education, Daimon is not adept at channeling power directly from extradimensional mystical entities such as the Vishanti, Watoomb, Cyttorak, Dormammu, and the like. Human magic uses three basic power sources: internal will (for astral projection and the like), channeling ambient energy (power bolts and shields), and being granted power from extradimensionals (the famous Crimson Bands of Cyttorak). Daimon is not adept at channeling the power of extradimensionals for his own use since, technically, he very nearly counts as one himself. It would be like Sligguth calling upon Thog the Nether-Spawn for power. That sort of thing is very personal and usually involves a formalized and limited agreement. On the upside, being half-demon, Daimon effectively generates his own internal power in ways purely human sorcerers cannot. But his repitoire is limited in that one regard since he lacks access to certain specific, powerful spells such as the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak and the Light of Agamotto.
Mistrusted
Although Daimon was well known by the 1940's "superhero community" from his time as Hellstorm, the Son of Satan, and is known by some in the 1940's supernatural community to have helped save the world before, he is not really trusted by many people. His heritage is known in the supernatural community and several people in those circles are fully aware of his current status as heir to a hell-realm. This is not the sort of thing that engenders trust among those people. Due to Daimon's historical actions in usurping and then keeping his father's realm means such individuals are more concerned with any long-term plans he may have. Basically, while he may be sought for advice, aid, and even protection, he is usually not entirely trusted by anyone anymore.
Devil Worshipper
Daimon Hellstrom is publicly known as an academic, occult scholar, and "devil worshipper". While technically this is not true (Daimon worships no one) his attitudes, morals, and philosophical outlook fall in line with those who profess to worship "The Devil" and he has made no secret of these facts. This means that there are places Daimon is not welcome (several academic institutions and churches) as well as people who will cause trouble for him or speak out against him when they can. This includes but is not limited to certain members of the clergy, moral crusaders, staunch conservatives, and the occasional prude. Daimon doesn't tend to care, but it can be inconvenient to his "normal" life.
Enemies
Daimon has had time to gather quite the impressive array of enemies. His "superhero" career as well as his time as a hell-lord means he has crossed paths with some nasty people and things. He has made a foe of his father, many demons, angels, numerous magic users, a degenerate god or two, their agents, as well as several demon cults who work at cross-purposes with him. These are the kinds of entities who take being foiled VERY personally. Daimon is subject to attacks and insidious plots from these beings, as well as many others. All involved know the stakes and they know that Daimon plays for keeps and so will they.
Temper
Daimon has a temper. A BAD temper. Daimon has the kind of temper that has led to him killing dozens of people because they were really, -really- annoying him (they were also a cult of evil nihilists, but still). Daimon has slapped people standing next to him when greatly frustrated. He is argumentative, viciously cruel when angered, potentially lethal to others, and in general, does not respond to stress in the way a well-adjusted person is supposed to. He also almost always feels totally justified in his anger, usually making it worse when someone tries to calm him down. He doesn't fly into mindless fits of destruction a la the Hulk or Wolverine, but his anger is usually directed in a fashion he feels is "appropriate". Ask him a dumb question after a failure and he may smack you. Really ruin his plans and threaten him and he may kill you.
Hybrid Nature
Daimon is the offspring of a human woman (albeit one mystically altered) and a parasitic, extradimensional "Type II" demon of great power. As such, Daimon has advantages and disadvantages associated with this condition. For starters, he can never be considered "pure" or "innocent" in any sense. Mystically, this distinction matters. He is an innately corrupt being by his very nature, as such, Daimon can be partially warded or held with the same sort of rituals or magics used to inhibit demons. However, Daimon has two advantages to somewhat mollify the effect of this: he is only half-demon and he is the lord of his own extradimensional "Hell". As such, while many such mystical barriers and wards may slow him and even harm him, few of that specific type can permanently stop him.
Daimon's physiology is also somewhat unusual. While, on the whole, he seems human, there are some subtle differences that are mostly mystical in nature or origin. For instance, despite the fact that he may have a blood type, using his blood in a transfusion is NOT recommended if you want your subject to survive the process. A typical exam will reveal very little, but something very high-tech may reveal a few anomalies. Finally, there are behavioral elements that Daimon quite literally has next to no control over. This is not a matter of self control, but rather a matter of spiritual state. As seen in other entries, Daimon is literally incapable of exercising anything but minimal control over certain aspects of his personality and he struggles mightily to do so, confining his excesses to those he deems "acceptable".
Traitor
Daimon is known as the betrayer of his father in demonic and sorcerous circles. While to most human magicians this isn't a huge deal, among demons Daimon is known as a possible usurper. It is a testament to the hypocrisy of demons that almost any of them would do the same if given an opportunity, but he still gets a lot of vitriol saved up for him when dealing with these creatures. Many of them will also seek to deliberately interfere with his plans out of spite.
Daimon Hellstrom, aka "Hellstorm, the son of Satan" hasn't been heard of publically since World War II where he was an active mystery man working alongside the Allies to combat the nefarious plots of Hitler's supernatural evils. He mainly worked out of England; however, when the Spectre put the kibosh on the super world, he abruptly disappeared and was not heard of until recent days.
Mystical circles may know: Over the years, a Hellstorm cult popped up and drew many fanatical followers who would gain residence to Hellstrom's home in Massachusetts. There they operated for many years until recently when those in the know could have heard that they were all slaughtered by the return of the master of the house. Those circles may also know that Hellstorm has recently returned to the Earth plane.
General populas may know: Though he's kept a low profile, he has re-established his supernatural investigation agency and runs a weekly ad in the major newspapers of the world. So if someone wished to hire him to investigate a supernatural event, they would dial 1-800-SON-OF-SATAN.
Other circles of influence and power may also know that Hellstorm is active in the New York branch of the Hellfire Club. Spending time in the club and enjoying his return to splendor.
The best way to establish RP with Hellstorm is to page him and say, "Hey, let's RP." If he's around and able, he'll be glad to get into a scene with just about anyone. Please keep in mind of his motivations. Parties, debauchery, exorcisms, demon or angel eviction, supernatural supers and capers, destroying evil, and all around fun.
