Mortimer Toynbee was the name given to the malformed child left at a British orphanage. Deformed thanks to his innate mutation, he was abused by children and adults alike gaining his nickname Toad, a rather simpering attitude, and all-around broken psyche. As he got older he naturally drifted in with gangs and other rough crowds who still treated him rather poorly. As a respite from this he would also frequent the local libraries reading mostly nonfiction and while he earned poor marks in school it was due to him often failing on purpose in order to try and fit in. At 18 he was on his own, a variety of criminal activities serving as his job while attending technical school when he could for mechanics and various nightschool courses in the sciences.
Flitting between various gangs doing oddjob work alongside his studies, Toad fared little better as a young adult than as a child. He was still abused and looked down upon for his appearance and attitude, even if other criminals were ready to make use of what talents he had. Things changed rather dramatically though the day the Spectre's judgment came to an end. Toad was in the midst of receiving a beating from his current group of 'friends' when his mutation suddenly sparked to its full potential. He doesn't remember much of what happened after, only that when he came to he was surrounded by six dead bodies. Toad grabbed everything he could and with his contacts was out of the country the next day heading for New York to make a new start for himself.
